NEW YORK, NY - The Society of Illustrators is proud to announce that Jillian Tamaki will be a Guest of Honor at the MoCCA Arts Festival on the weekend of April 6-7, 2013 at the 69th Regiment Armory in Manhattan. A notable, multiple award-winning voice in contemporary graphic novels and illustration, Tamaki will be honored with an exhibition of her original artwork, and will meet Festival attendees at a spotlight program and signings.
Jillian Tamaki is a distinguished illustrator, graphic novelist and educator who shares her knowledge, skill and passion as a professor of illustration at the School of Visual Arts. Her debut 2008 graphic novel SKIM, written with her cousin Mariko Tamaki, was recognized with numerous accolades including The New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book, Ignatz Award for Outstanding Graphic Novel, finalist in the Governor Generals Children’s Literature Awards, and nominated for four categories for the Eisner Awards. Her nontraditional short comics, including the ongoing webcomicSuperMutant Magic Academy, garner increasing acclaim for their contemplative surrealism and stylistic refinement. The Society of Illustrators has awarded Tamaki with multiple gold medals for achievement in illustration and she is currently Chair of Illustrators 56 Annual Exhibition. Tamaki is a strong advocate for intellectually engaged illustration and cartooning.
Tamaki says “I am excited and honoured to be invited as a special guest to this year’s MoCCA. The Society of Illustrators has become a vital, engaging (and yes, fun!) presence in the illustration community, and I have hopes that MoCCA Fest will similarly thrive under their stewardship.”
Tamaki joins Bill Griffith, the legendary creator of Zippy in headlining an assembly of more than 400 cutting-edge artists presenting at the MoCCA Arts Festival. Notable exhibitors include publishers Abrams ComicArts, Adhouse Books, Drawn and Quarterly, Fantagraphics, FirstSecond, Pantheon, and Top Shelf Productions.
